CAT 2020 Exam Pattern

The CAT 2020 Entrance Examination will consist of 3 sections. the total no. of questions will be 100 questions. Each section is timed with the individual time limit of 1 hour. You need to get a high score in each of the 3 sections as there is also a sectional score cut off in IIMs for shortlisting.

  • Total No. of Questions: 100
  • Number of sections: 3
  • Questions with negative marking (MCQs): 75
  • Questions without negative marking (Non-MCQs): 25
  • Score awarded for each correct answer: 3 marks
  • Negative marking Applicable for  wrong answers in MCQs: -1 mark

CAT 2020 Syllabus

The CAT syllabus is not predefined by the authority and nor the CAT 2020 syllabus was outlined. Every year, after each CAT Examination the syllabus is changed by the Examination Authority. The syllabus for CAT question paper 2020 may be changed for CAT exam syllabus in 2020. The CAT 2020 Entrance Examination is Consist of five sections:

  • Verbal and Reading Comprehension
  • Verbal Ability
  • Logical & Analytical Reasoning
  • Data Interpretation
  • Quantitative Ability

Syllabus for CAT 2020 has four major components:

  • Overall Syllabus for CAT 2020 – Split section wise with overall 100 questions carrying 300 marks.
  • CAT 2020 Syllabus for VARC: 34 Questions on Limited Topics, carrying 102 Marks
  • CAT 2020 Syllabus for DILR: 32 Questions on changed topics every year, carrying 96 Marks.
  • CAT 2020 Syllabus for Quant: 34 Questions with more focus on Arithmetic, now carrying 102 Marks.

Syllabus of Reading Comprehension

  1. Current affairs making an impact on Social Life, International Affairs, Govt policies and Schemes for example Triple Talaq, Clean India Mission, Migration of people from one country to other, Growing intolerance across the Globe,
  2. Business & Economic RC Passages for example Global economic changes, economic development at the cost of environment, Impact of Demonetization in India, Wasteful expenditure by Governments
  3. RC passages from various English Literature books, from articles authored by great philosophers, thinkers, from various speeches of great personalities like passages from Charles Dickens, Aristotle, Martin Luther King, Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, Churchill among others
  4. Passages on Science & Culture including the journey to the Modern world; Fading culture with the advancement of technology
  5. Abstract topics and fiction are also included in the Reading Comprehension Syllabus for CAT. These

Passages make the candidates think much leading to put themselves in the author’s shoes before answering the questions following these passages since they are opinion based.

  1. RC Passages on Historical events leading to social changes for example French Revolution, War of Roses, Social changes in Indian History and thoughts shared by  various activists which are very much relevant even today
  2. RC Passages from Mythology. These passages try to correlate the Mythological events with the current social structure and answers to the questions on them have to be inferred.

Ans. If you start CAT 2020 preparation now, you should finish the core syllabus of CAT by July-August. Thereafter start solving previous years CAT question papers, mock test series and sample papers to develop speed and accuracy. The last three months (Sept-November) before CAT should be entirely dedicated to mock tests.

Q. Will cats be conducted in 2020?

Ans. There is no proposal to postpone or cancel CAT 2020, says IIM Indore. Instead, the process of conducting the exam is already on. … No change in CAT 2020 Testing Mode. Professor Harshal Lowalekar, Faculty and Chair Admissions at IIM Indore has been appointed as the Convener of CAT 2020 exam.

Q. Is coaching necessary for CAT?

No one has managed to score a 99 percentile by ignoring any of these sections during prep.
