Registration for admission to government and private medical colleges in India relies on the NEET exam score. The deadline to register for the NEET UG 2024 exam on the official website exams.nta.ac.in/NEET is March 16, 2024. Initially set for March 9, 2024, the deadline was extended.
As of March 8, 2024, media sources indicate that over 25 lakh students had already applied for NEET UG 2024, marking it the highest number of applications recorded. Last year, the medical entrance exam saw 20.87 lakh applicants. This year, the count has exceeded 25 lakh even before the original deadline, and it’s anticipated to rise further by March 16, 2024.
The higher number of female applicants
The NEET UG 2024 exam has seen a record number of over 25 lakh applicants, with females comprising more than 55%. This marks an increase of 4.20 lakh applicants from last year. With only 1,08,940 seats available in medical colleges nationwide, competition is expected to be fierce, reflecting the high number of applicants.
Highest application from UP
The highest number of applications for NEET UG 2024 has been from Uttar Pradesh, with approximately 3.23 lakh students applying, followed by Maharashtra with 2.69 lakh candidates. Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have also seen significant application numbers, with around 1.9 lakh, 1.49 lakh, and 1.47 lakh applicants, respectively. Delhi has witnessed 65,809 candidates applying for the exam.
According to the NTA exam calendar, the NEET UG exam is scheduled for May 5, 2024, and results are expected to be released on June 14, 2024. Qualifying for this exam will enable candidates to secure admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, and other undergraduate medical courses in various medical colleges nationwide. Presently, Tamil Nadu holds the highest number of MBBS seats.

For admission in various courses of medical college, it is necessary to appear for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. It was advised to apply for the NEET UG 2024 exam through an Aadhaar number. However, many applicants had not linked their Aadhaar-mobile numbers, and hence, many were facing problems related to OTP. Many applicants had thereby asked NTA to extend the registration date.
