RML Hospital Female MBBS Students Allege Gender Discriminatory Hostel Rules: Female MBBS students at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (ABVIMS & RML) have claimed they are subjected to ‘gender-biased hostel regulations, repressive rules, and harassment’ by the authorities. The students are calling for a standardized code of conduct for all medical students, as such a policy is currently lacking

The students have claimed that the hostel curfew was reduced exclusively for female medicos, and it is now mandatory to send monthly hostel attendance reports to parents for verification. They further asserted that attempts to eat or study in the common room and make phone calls to parents late at night are met with opposition. These unofficial rules, they argue, restrict women’s freedom and perpetuate outdated notions rather than ensuring safety. “The authorities apply these rules inconsistently and do not take responsibility.

According to the students, representatives were being coerced into submitting a letter agreeing to these rules, despite no official publication of such regulations. Addressing these concerns, all female undergraduate hostel residents recently wrote to the Chairperson of the Hostel Committee, the Director, and the Medical Superintendent of ABVIMS & RML Hospital. Highlighting the gender disparity, the students emphasized the absence of an active measure to implement a uniform code of conduct for all undergraduate students.
