The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has cancelled the government’s order that gave special reservation in four medical colleges of Uttar Pradesh- Kannauj, Ambedkar Nagar, Jalaun, and Saharanpur.
Under the Special Grant Component, more than 79% of seats in these colleges were reserved for certain categories. A petition was filed against this rule, and after the hearing, Justice Pankaj Bhatia’s single bench cancelled it.
Reservation Breakdown in Admissions
These four medical colleges together have 340 MBBS seats, with 85 seats in each institution. Out of these, 248 were reserved for SC, 20 for ST, 44 for OBC, and only 28 were left for the General category. For each college, the seat distribution was as follows:

The special reservation system was started to get central government funding under the Special Grant Component. Because of this, the quota was increased from the usual 50% to over 79%.
Next Steps
Following the High Court’s order, the Counselling Board has scheduled a meeting on Sunday to review admissions in these four colleges. The Medical Education Department will also seek legal advice on implementing the court’s decision.
