New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Maharashtra, to expedite its investigation into allegations that DY Patil Medical College, Pune, is overcharging MBBS students by collecting fees for five years instead of the mandated 4.5 years.
In a letter addressed to the DME, the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) of the NMC has also requested an immediate compliance report to enable further necessary action.
Earlier reports revealed that multiple students had filed grievances against DY Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, alleging that the institute was charging fees for the full five years of the MBBS course, despite the NMC’s guideline that the course duration is only 4.5 years. In response to these complaints, the NMC directed the DME Maharashtra to investigate the matter and determine whether other medical colleges in the state are also collecting fees for the additional six months.

In its letter dated May 1, 2025, the NMC had warned that these complaints would be considered during the approval process for the institute’s annual renewal for the academic year 2025–26. The Commission also reiterated that while it issues the necessary guidelines, enforcement remains the responsibility of the institutions and relevant state authorities.
Following up, the UGMEB again wrote to the DME on May 23, 2025, urging swift action. “You were requested to enquire into the matter relating to fees being charged for the fifth year by Dr DY Patil Medical College, Hospital & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, and whether any other medical college in Maharashtra is charging full fees instead of for only 4.5 years. You are requested to expedite the matter and send a compliance report immediately,” the Commission stated.
Meanwhile, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has also taken cognizance of the issue. Acting upon a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Dr. Divyansh Dwivedi, the UGC has flagged concerns over the exorbitant fee structure, irregularities in the fee fixation process, and unauthorized fee collection for the fifth MBBS year. The Commission has directed DY Patil Medical College to take appropriate corrective action.
The RTI application and subsequent UGC response have added further scrutiny to the institute, which operates under deemed university status.
