Madras High Court Declines Re-NEET UG 2025 for Candidates Affected by Power Cut

New Delhi: On Friday, June 6, 2025, the Madras High Court dismissed a batch of writ petitions seeking a re-conduct of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test – Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2025 for candidates who faced power outages at their exam centres.

Justice C. Kumarappan stated that when the National Testing Agency (NTA), after conducting a field verification, concluded that the power outage did not affect the candidates’ performance, such a finding must be accepted by the court—unless there is evidence of malafide intent.

“In this case, I do not find any malafide on the part of the respondent. Moreover, over 22 lakh students appeared for NEET-UG 2025 across India. Ordering a re-examination would severely impact the level playing field for these two million candidates,” the judge observed.

A group of NEET-UG 2025 candidates who appeared at examination centres in Avadi, Kunrathur, and K.K. Nagar in Chennai had approached the Madras High Court, claiming that power outages during the exam significantly affected their performance. They requested the court to order a re-examination for themselves and other similarly affected candidates.

However, Additional Solicitor General A.R.L. Sundaresan informed the court that the National Testing Agency (NTA) had conducted a scientific assessment and found no evidence that the power outage impacted the candidates’ performance. He emphasized that the exam was held in broad daylight.

He further argued that if the outage had truly hindered the candidates, they would have struggled to properly shade the OMR sheets. In fact, the number of questions attempted by the petitioning students was significantly higher than the district average.

Although the High Court had earlier issued an interim order during the summer vacation restraining the NTA from releasing the NEET-UG 2025 results until an inquiry into the complaints was completed, that interim order now stands vacated following the dismissal of the main writ petitions.
