Bengaluru: Many students who appeared for the NEET UG 2025 exam found the Physics paper very difficult. Because of this, many students from Karnataka are now thinking of opting for engineering instead of trying again for a medical seat.
Students who did not get government medical seats or their preferred colleges last year had spent an entire year preparing for NEET 2025. But now after facing yet another tough paper, they do not want to waste any more time and are planning to take admission in engineering courses.
A student said, “Physics was very difficult this year. I don’t think I will get a good rank. I have also given the KCET exam, so now I will do engineering.”
Another student, who is taking NEET for the second time, said, “Last year I got a good rank in KCET but I did not pursue engineering. This year, I will not wait; I will take whichever seat I get.”
Due to this, experts expect more students to apply for engineering. Last year, over 13,000 government engineering seats and nearly 19,000 COMEDK seats remained vacant. Now, AICTE has removed the cap on the number of engineering seats, so colleges are increasing their admissions – especially in computer science and AI courses.
A senior official said, “Earlier, if a college asked for 60 more seats, they got only 30. Now they are getting approval for all 60 or even more.”
However, colleges in rural areas and regions like Kalyan Karnataka will not see much increase in admissions.
KEA (Karnataka Examination Authority) officials said students from reserved categories still have a good chance. “Students scoring around 500 out of 720 can also get a seat. Last year, students with 550 marks got a seat. Since the paper was tough for all, fewer students may qualify this year,” said an official. In 2024, 11 lakh students were eligible for medical seats.
