Rajasthan: In a major step to make medical education more accessible, the Rajasthan government’s decision to reduce MBBS (NEET-UG) fees for NRI quota students has resulted in a remarkable 57 % increase in applicants from the NRI category this year.
What Changed: Fee Reduction & Its Purpose
Under the revised policy, the annual fee for MBBS NRI quota seats in state medical colleges has been reduced from ₹31 lakh to ₹23.9 lakh per year. Earlier, the fee was linked to the U.S. dollar, increasing yearly and creating heavy financial pressure on students.
The fee cut aims to fill vacant NRI seats that often went unclaimed and were converted into management quota seats. This move helps ensure full seat utilization and boosts the state’s medical education revenue.

Surge in NRI Applicants: 57 % Jump
Following the fee reduction, the number of NRI applicants for MBBS admission in Rajasthan medical colleges has jumped by 57 %. This sharp rise shows how sensitive NRI admissions are to changes in fee structures, proving that affordable pricing can drive demand in higher education.
Seat Allocation and Institutional Impact
Medical colleges in Rajasthan allocate their MBBS seats as follows:
- 50 % Government quota
- 35 % Management quota
- 15 % NRI quota
By making NRI seats more affordable, the state expects to improve seat occupancy and stabilize its income through higher enrollment, even at lower per-seat fees.
Key Benefits of the Fee Cut
- Improved Access: More NRI students can now afford quality medical education in India.
- Full Seat Utilization: Vacant NRI seats can now be filled easily.
- Revenue Growth: Higher total admissions can compensate for lower per-seat fees.
- Predictable Fee Structure: Breaking the link with foreign exchange rates ensures stability.
Challenges Ahead
- Despite the NRI Quota fee cut, the new fee of ₹23.9 lakh per year is still high for many families.
- Colleges must maintain strong academic and infrastructure standards to match rising demand.
- Transparent implementation during counselling and admissions will be crucial to avoid misuse.
