Karnataka is likely to see a significant rise in the number of government MBBS seats in the academic year 2025-26. The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has announced that around 200 new MBBS seats are expected to be added across government medical colleges in the state.
Two New Government Medical Colleges Proposed
Two new government medical colleges have been proposed in Ramanagara and Kanakapura. If these colleges receive approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC), they could add approximately 200 to 250 MBBS seats. These colleges were not approved by the NMC in 2024, but officials are optimistic about getting the nod this year.
Karnataka’s Total Government MBBS Seat Pool May Reach 12,795
Currently, Karnataka offers 12,545 total MBBS seats, out of which 3,500 are in government medical colleges. With the addition of 200-250 new seats, the government MBBS seat count could rise significantly, creating more opportunities for NEET UG aspirants within the state.

Karnataka: A Unique State Offering Govt Quota in Deemed Universities
Interestingly, Karnataka remains one of only two states in India, alongside Jharkhand, that offer government quota MBBS seats in Deemed Universities. These 189 MBBS seats are available in six Deemed Universities in the state. These seats allow eligible students to pursue medical education at comparatively lower costs than full-paid private seats.
This move has proven to be a game-changer for many students who fall just short of government college cut-offs but still want to continue their MBBS journey.
Seat-wise Distribution of Karnataka Government Medical Colleges (2025-26)
Here is a detailed list of the 24 government medical colleges in Karnataka and the MBBS seats currently available in each:
Note: As per the NMC, Karnataka currently has 22 approved government medical colleges. The above table includes a total of 24 colleges and seat count, which assumes the addition of 2 proposed colleges, Ramanagara and Kanakapura, if they receive NMC approval.
What This Means for NEET Aspirants
If the projected seats are approved in time, more students will get the chance to study MBBS in affordable government colleges. This expansion is crucial given the rising demand for medical education and the limited number of government seats across India.
Aspiring NEET candidates are advised to stay updated with official announcements from DME Karnataka and MCC regarding counselling dates and eligibility for newly added seats.
