GMC Ambernath: Senior resident doctors at Government Medical College (GMC) Ambernath have initiated an indefinite strike, citing 5 months of unpaid stipends. The move follows a stern ultimatum: the pending payments must be cleared within 48 hours, or non-essential services will remain halted.

The GMC Ambernath chapter of the Maharashtra Senior Resident Doctors’ Association (MSRDA) appealed to the college dean, stating that both bonded and non-bonded senior residents have not received stipends since April–May 2025. They stressed that despite fulfilling clinical, teaching, and emergency duties, doctors are facing severe financial hardship.

“We regret to inform you that if no concrete action is initiated within the stipulated 48-hour period, the resident doctors … will proceed with complete withdrawal of non-essential services.”

Strike Conditions

During the strike, emergency services, including trauma care, ICU operations, and other critical care procedures, will continue without disruption.

However, non-essential services such as out-patient departments (OPDs), elective surgeries, and routine teaching activities will remain suspended until the pending stipends are released.

The resident doctors at GMC Ambernath have announced the commencement of their indefinite strike from 3 PM on 13 August. They have given the administration a 48-hour deadline, demanding that all pending stipend payments be cleared by 15 August.

Going forward, the doctors have urged the authorities to establish a transparent mechanism that guarantees the timely disbursement of monthly stipends and to issue a formal written assurance ensuring such delays do not occur again.

Resident Doctors’ Response

Dr. Jaiganesh R., MSRDA’s GMC Ambernath head, emphasised that unless the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) approves the stipend grant, the strike will persist: “Until DMER releases our stipend grant or deadline to release it and giving assurance that it will not happen in future, the strike will continue.”

Underlining their rights, he added: “We don’t want further delay in stipend, also every month we should get our stipend on time, it’s our right.”

Stipend Issue Recurring Across India

Delayed stipends and pay disparities have emerged as a recurring challenge across Indian medical colleges. Earlier we reported at edufever.com on how private medical colleges save crores in stipends from students.

In Maharashtra, a similar dispute at Grant Medical College and GMC Chandrapur saw senior residents unpaid since May, culminating in an ultimatum issued by the MSRDA.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has previously issued notices to several colleges for failing to disburse stipends or paying meagre amounts, ranging from as low as ₹2,000 to ₹5,000, in violation of regulations.

Patient Care at Risk

If the issue remains unresolved, the ongoing suspension of OPDs and elective services could hinder healthcare access for non-critical patients.

Call for Transparency: The striking doctors are advocating for an automated and timely stipend disbursement system to prevent such delays from recurring.

Systemic Reform Needed: This protest at GMC Ambernath mirrors a broader national concern, as several medical colleges across the country are already under NMC scrutiny for irregular stipend practices.

GMC Ambernath’s resident doctors await a decisive response from the administration and DMER. Their collective action highlights the broader struggle within India’s healthcare system: the need to respect and compensate young doctors dedicated to patient care.
