Srinagar: The Democratic Medical Association (DMA) has appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir government to revise the monthly stipend for MBBS interns, which is currently ₹12,000. The association has written to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Health Minister Sakeen Masood (Itoo), and the Director of Health Services, highlighting the urgent need for an increase.
Financial Hardship and Disparity
The DMA stated that internship is a crucial phase in a medical graduate’s career, where interns contribute significantly to patient care and public health services. However, the stipend remains low compared to other states, causing financial difficulties and discontent among young doctors. Despite repeated appeals over the years, no conclusive action has been taken, leaving interns frustrated.
Appeals from Medical Bodies
The letter was jointly signed by DMA representatives Dr. Amit Vyas, Dr. Shubh Pratap Solanki, Dr. Sheikh Amir, and Dr. Kamal Singh. Dr. Vyas expressed hope that the government will take up the matter with urgency.
Earlier, AIMSA Vice President Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan also sought the CM’s intervention, pointing out that repeated assurances over six years have not resulted in any progress.
