AIQ vs State Quota: Who Benefits More?
Not all new seats will be available under MCC’s All India Quota (AIQ). Here’s the breakdown:
- All India Quota (AIQ):
- 295 government seats
- 500 deemed university seats (100% AIQ)
- State Quota:
- 2175 government seats to be filled through state-level counselling
This means that while AIQ students will see some benefit, the majority of the new seats (over 85%) will go to state counselling rounds.
State-Wise Distribution of New MBBS Seats
According to NMC’s official update, the following states received the highest number of new MBBS seats:
State | New Seats Added |
---|---|
Karnataka | 400 |
Madhya Pradesh | 275 |
Odisha | 200 |
Jammu & Kashmir | 190 |
Assam | 175 |
Punjab, Kerala, Rajasthan | 100 each |
West Bengal, Telangana | 75 each |
Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, UP | 50 each |
Andhra Pradesh | 30 (lowest) |
This state-wise addition will significantly improve opportunities for local students, especially in Karnataka, MP, Odisha, and J&K, which saw the biggest boosts.
New Government Medical Colleges in 2025
The NMC granted Letter of Permission (LoP) to 16 new government medical colleges, contributing 1000 MBBS seats in 2025.
Some key highlights include:
- Tonk and Jaisalmer (Rajasthan) – 50 seats each
- New colleges in Odisha, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh
These institutions will not only expand capacity but also improve medical infrastructure in underserved regions.
Impact on NEET UG 2025 Aspirants
The addition of 2470 MBBS seats is expected to bring several advantages:
- Reduced competition: Students with slightly lower ranks now stand a chance.
- Better opportunities in government colleges: Especially for those who narrowly missed in Round 1.
- Affordable options: 500 deemed university seats give relief to those who cannot afford costly private colleges.
- Increased hope: More students will find a pathway to pursue MBBS in India without going abroad.
“The seat increase is great news, especially for those who could not secure a seat in the first round. However, aspirants must remember that only a limited number of seats are added under AIQ. They should actively participate in state-level counselling to maximise chances,” said a career counselling expert.
Why State Counselling Is More Important in 2025
Since most of the new seats (2175 out of 2470) fall under the state quota, students must:
- Regularly check their state counselling authority websites.
- Complete document verification and option filling on time.
- Track state-wise cutoff trends for better decision-making.
Ignoring state-level counselling could mean missing out on the majority of the new opportunities.
Increased Hope for NEET UG 2025 Students
The approval of 1970 new government MBBS seats and 500 deemed university seats has lifted India’s medical education capacity to 1,20,618 MBBS seats in 2025.
While AIQ counselling will benefit a limited number of aspirants, the real game-changer lies in state-level counselling rounds. For lakhs of NEET UG 2025 aspirants, this development is a ray of hope, but success will depend on smart strategy, timely participation, and state-level updates.
