This year, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced that 12.36 lakh students qualified NEET UG out of 22.09 lakh who appeared. This is slightly lower than last year’s 13.15 lakh. While over half the candidates cleared the exam, the real challenge now is securing an MBBS seat.
As per the National Medical Commission (NMC)’s updated seat matrix for 2025 – 26, India offers 1,18,190 MBBS seats across 780 medical colleges, including AIIMS, JIPMER, and other government and private institutions. This means only a fraction of qualified students will get a seat. The rest may need to explore studying abroad, opt for private colleges, or consider allied medical courses.

Together, these five states account for nearly 45% of all MBBS seats in India.
States with the Fewest MBBS Seats
Some regions still have very limited access to medical education:
- Arunachal Pradesh: 100
- Meghalaya: 200
- Andaman & Nicobar Islands: 114
- Dadra & Nagar Haveli: 177
- Sikkim: 150
In these states, students often depend on private colleges or seek admission in other states.
Government vs Private MBBS College Fees

Growth of MBBS Seats in Recent Years
The government has significantly increased seat availability:
- 2014: 51,000 seats in 387 colleges
- 2023: Over 1.07 lakh seats in 706 colleges
- 2025: 1,18,190 seats in 780 colleges
This includes expansion under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), with more colleges set up in underserved districts. The goal is to improve the doctor-patient ratio and reduce healthcare gaps across states. Still, access remains unequal, some regions lack even one government medical college.
Final MBBS Counselling
With almost 13 lakh students qualifying and only 1.18 lakh MBBS seats available, competition remains intense. Centralised counselling will now determine who secures a seat. Many others will have to consider private institutions, alternate courses, or options abroad.
