NMC- ICMR PhD Program: The National Medical Commission (NMC), together with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is going to introduce new PhD programmes aimed at strengthening India’s medical research ecosystem.
NMC chairman Dr Abhijat Sheth announced the initiative during the 3rd convocation ceremony of Bhaikaka University in Karamsad, Anand, Gujarat.
The initiative is designed to encourage young doctors and scientists to take up research, develop innovative solutions, and contribute to the country’s growing healthcare needs.
By creating more structured pathways for high-quality research, the two bodies hope to boost homegrown discoveries and make India a stronger player in global medical innovation.
Dr Sheth highlighted how fast non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing in India. He stressed the need for preventive healthcare, better self-care awareness, and strong professionalism taught through the ATCOM module. He also pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as a reminder and stressed that future medical professionals must learn a culture of preparedness.
| What is ATCOM? | ATCOM stands for Attitude and Communication Competencies for Indian Medical Graduates. | The goal of medical education is to create doctors with the right knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and ethics who can serve as the first point of contact for the community. To achieve this, the NMC requires that attitude, communication, and ethics be taught clearly and continuously throughout the MBBS curriculum. |
He also said that NMC has added 18,000 additional medical seats across India, and there will be more seats added in the coming years. So to train this large number of health professionals, India needs specialists and researchers.
Only quantity is not enough; India needs quality doctors.
