New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has mandated the completion of the Basic Course in Medical Education Technology (BCMET) as a prerequisite for medical faculty promotions to Associate Professor and Professor. Faculty members must complete this training at NMC-designated institutions to qualify for these positions.
According to the public notice issued by the NMC, Paragraph 6 of the Teachers Eligibility Qualification in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2022 outlines the norms for faculty appointments and promotions in Broad Specialties (MD/MS) and Super Specialties (DM/MCh) in permitted and recognized medical colleges. The regulation explicitly requires faculty members to complete the BCMET course before being promoted.
For faculty appointments in government medical colleges where positions are sanctioned and filled at the last moment, the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) has introduced an additional requirement. In such cases, the Principal Secretary of Medical Education from the respective State/UT must provide an affidavit confirming that newly appointed faculty members will complete the BCMET training within the next academic year.
The completion of BCMET training is mandatory before the application process for the Letter of Permission (LOP) for the academic year 2026-27, which is expected to commence around October 2025.
