If you have qualified for NEET 2025, it’s time to understand the real competition, seat distribution and what you can do to be in the list.
Total MBBS Seats in India (2024-25)
According to the latest data from the National Medical Commission (NMC), India has a total of over 1,18,148 MBBS seats. These are divided between government and private/deemed universities.

What Makes Government MBBS Seats So Competitive?
- Affordable Fees:
Government colleges charge only ₹1,000 to ₹50,000 per year. Private colleges often charge ₹10–25 lakh per year. - Better Quality of Education:
Most top-ranking institutes like AIIMS, JIPMER, and state medical colleges are government-run and offer top-tier faculty, clinical exposure, and infrastructure. - Cutoffs are Very High:
Due to demand, general category students often need 650+ NEET marks for a safe chance.
Who Actually Gets the Seats?
Government MBBS seats are divided by reservation policies:
Category | % of Govt Seats Reserved (All India Quota) |
---|---|
General (Unreserved) | ~40% |
OBC | 27% |
SC | 15% |
ST | 7.5% |
EWS | 10% |
PwD | 5% (within category) |
State Quota vs All India Quota
Out of all government MBBS seats:
- 85% are reserved under the State Quota (only for state-domicile students)
- 15% come under the All India Quota (AIQ) (open to all)
This means your NEET score + domicile + reservation category together decide your fate.
What If You Don’t Get a Govt Seat?
If you fall short in cutoffs:
- Private MBBS Colleges may be too expensive (₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore)
- Deemed Universities offer seats but have limited value unless well-ranked
- MBBS Abroad in countries like Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan is growing popular due to:
- NMC recognition
- Affordable fees (₹20–35 lakh total)
- No donation required
Getting a government MBBS seat is a challenge, but not a dream beyond reach. With lakhs of aspirants and only 59,782 government seats, the competition is tight.
