- Three doctors appointed as statutory inspectors by NBEMS/NMC
- Three intermediaries and college officials
They were apprehended in Bengaluru at the moment of bribe handover.
A CBI spokesperson said the accused had conspired to manipulate the formal inspection process. In return for a favourable judgment report essential for the college’s recognition, the inspectors allegedly demanded and received ₹55 lakh.
Their methods included:
- Colluding with college management
- Using intermediaries to mask the actual exchange
- Exploiting their delegated power as official inspectors to issue compliant reports
Acting on intelligence that examiners were to meet in Bengaluru for the transaction, the CBI set up a trap. They arrested all six individuals mid-exchange, preventing the transfer of the bribe cash.
The agency has indicated that the accused will be presented before the appropriate jurisdictional courts.
This scandal echoes earlier corruption cases, including:
- NAAC rating scams, where assessors accepted money for higher grades
- Vyapam and DMAT cases, involving large-scale admission fraud in MP
Experts caution that systemic oversight must be ramped up to preserve integrity in medical education.
Next Steps in Investigation
- Conducting further raids and data seizures
- Interrogating the arrested individuals to uncover the full network
- Examining any other medical colleges that may have benefited from similar misconduct
- Evaluating whether the inspection reports issued are now invalid
The CBI has confirmed that the probe is ongoing, with more revelations expected.
Why This Is Significant
- Trust in accreditation and recognition processes is foundational to public health and professional standards.
- Manipulated inspection reports threaten the quality of medical education and may endanger patient welfare.
- This bust renews calls for stronger accountability mechanisms, such as randomised inspections, transparent grading, and digital audit trails.
