Bihar MBBS Colleges 2025: The Bihar Cabinet has approved a historic expansion in the state’s medical education sector by announcing the opening of 7 new government medical colleges and a ₹7,000 hike in the MBBS internship stipend. This decision directly impacts both medical aspirants and the healthcare infrastructure in Bihar, where access to quality healthcare remains a pressing challenge.
The addition of seven more colleges will significantly increase the availability of MBBS seats, improve access to quality healthcare in remote regions, and reduce the need for patients to travel to bigger cities for advanced treatment.
According to Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, Additional Chief Secretary of the Cabinet Secretariat Department, the expansion reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the shortage of doctors and strengthening healthcare delivery across Bihar.

Expansion of Bihar MBBS Medical Colleges
Currently, Bihar has 12 operational government medical colleges, with 20 more institutions already under construction. With the addition of 7 newly approved colleges, the state is moving closer to its long-standing vision of one medical college in every district.
Locations of the 7 New MBBS Colleges in Bihar
The newly approved medical colleges will be set up in the following districts:
- Kishanganj
- Katihar
- Rohtas
- Sheohar
- Lakhisarai
- Sheikhpura
- Arwal
Why These Districts Matter
- Sheohar and Sheikhpura: Among the smallest and most backwards districts, these regions had no access to medical education until now.
- Kishanganj and Katihar: Border districts with West Bengal and the Northeast, strategically important for catering to cross-border patients.
- Rohtas and Arwal: Strengthening southern Bihar’s healthcare capacity, reducing dependency on Patna.
This move will not only add hundreds of new MBBS seats but also improve healthcare delivery in underserved areas.

MBBS Internship Stipend Hike in Bihar
Along with expanding colleges, the Cabinet has also increased the MBBS intern stipend in Bihar.
- Old Stipend: ₹20,000 per month
- New Stipend: ₹27,000 per month
Why the Stipend Hike is Important
- Cost of Living Adjustment: Interns often work long shifts in rural hospitals; this hike acknowledges their real expenses.
- Retention of Young Doctors: Competitive stipends may reduce the brain drain of MBBS graduates leaving Bihar for better-paying states.
- Recognition of Service: MBBS interns played a critical role during COVID-19. The stipend revision gives overdue recognition.
Note: Physiotherapy and occupational therapy interns will now receive ₹20,000, up from ₹15,000.

Boost for Healthcare Access
Bihar’s doctor-patient ratio has been one of the worst in India. By creating new medical colleges, the state will generate more trained doctors and expand tertiary care facilities in remote regions.
Local Aspirants to Benefit Most
Students from backwards and remote districts will now have access to MBBS seats closer to home under the 85% state quota, reducing their reliance on distant colleges in Patna, Gaya, or outside Bihar.
Challenges Still Remain
- Faculty recruitment and infrastructure remain a hurdle.
- Many government colleges in India struggle with NMC compliance.
- Without strong monitoring, there’s a risk of these colleges becoming “paper colleges” with poor facilities.
Comparison of Bihar MBBS Stipend with Other States
- Bihar: ₹27,000/month (after hike)
- Delhi: ₹35,000+/month
- Maharashtra: ₹30,000-₹35,000/month
Bihar’s stipend is better than many states, but still not at par with the leading ones.

Long-Term Impact of Bihar’s Medical Education Push
If executed effectively, these decisions will:
- Reduce doctor shortages in rural Bihar.
- Encourage middle-class families to opt for affordable MBBS in government colleges rather than costly private options.
- Improve healthcare delivery, since each medical college also functions as a major hospital.
However, the real test lies in implementation. Faculty recruitment, teaching hospital upgrades, and compliance with NMC norms will determine the actual success of this reform.
A Landmark Shift in Bihar MBBS Medical Colleges 2025
The decision to open 7 new MBBS medical colleges in Bihar and hike the internship stipend to ₹27,000 marks a transformative moment for the state’s medical education. While the stipend hike offers immediate relief to young doctors, the long-term impact will depend on how effectively the government ensures infrastructure, faculty availability, and hospital facilities in these new colleges.
If implemented sincerely, this reform could reshape Bihar’s healthcare ecosystem, ensuring more doctors for underserved areas and strengthening medical education across the state.
