MCC College Preference List: MCC NEET UG 2025 Counselling Round 1 is underway. Most of the NEET UG aspirants find themselves confused during MCC counselling: creating a college preference list that could decide their medical career trajectory. With over 750 MBBS colleges available under AIQ, Deemed Universities, Central Universities, and ESIC/AFMC institutions, a smart, structured 300 college preference list is the key to maximising your chances.

This article shares a practical, step-by-step framework to help you build a strong, rank-optimised MCC choice list.

How to Build a 300 College Preference List?

Many students believe that listing just 20-30 colleges is sufficient. However, in competitive ranks or uncertain scenarios (Round 3, stray round), a longer list provides critical backup.

  • Wide coverage = more chances in downward movement.
  • Reduces the risk of going unallotted in the round 3/mop-up.
  • Provides flexibility to consider multiple types: government, deemed, ESIC, etc.

STEP 1: Categorise Your Options

Break your options into four buckets:

Government Medical Colleges (AIQ 15%)

  • Aim here if you are below 50k rank.
  • Use the previous year AIQ cutoff PDF.

ESIC & Central Universities

  • ESIC for IP quota students (up to 80k ranks)
  • BHU/AMU for those with a minority quota or domicile.

Deemed Universities

  • Consider location, fees (15L-25L/year), and NEET PG success.
  • Some have better ROI and lower dropout rates.

AFMC

  • Add if you’re open to a military medical career.

STEP 2: Use Tools & Resources

Counselling experts recommend the following data sources:

  • MCC official seat matrix PDFs (Current + Last 2 years)
  • NEET Rank vs College Allotment lists
  • College Predictor Tools
  • NEET PG Success Reports for Deemed Universities
  • NIRF Medical Rankings (Quality-based filtering)

STEP 3: Follow the “10-30-60” Rule

This formula helps you distribute your choices based on rank & preference:

  • Top 10%: Dream colleges (AIIMS, MAMC, JIPMER, KMC)
  • Next 30%: Realistic options (based on previous year cutoffs)
  • Last 60%: Backup deemed & ESIC options for lower rounds

Example (if you are at Rank 45,000):

  • Top 30 colleges: Government seats you might just reach
  • Mid 90 colleges: Deemed & ESIC with known cutoffs around 40-55k
  • Final 180 colleges: Deemed colleges with high cutoffs (upto 1.5L)

STEP 4: Build Your Spreadsheet

Make a working Excel sheet with the following columns:

  • College Name
  • Type (Govt/Deemed/ESIC/Central)
  • State
  • Previous Year Closing Rank
  • Fees & Hostel Costs
  • Bond Duration (if any)
  • NEET PG % (for deemed only)
  • Personal Notes (budget, location, hostel, etc.)

Use filters to sort based on type, fees, distance, etc.

STEP 5: Prioritise Preferences

Order them by:

  • Academic reputation
  • Fee affordability
  • Location (North/South preference)
  • Hostel & mess quality (refer to YouTube reviews)
  • Alumni feedback and FMGE coaching support

Tip: Add 50 Extra Deemed Colleges

In round 3 and stray rounds, colleges that weren’t your top priority may still offer a seat. Deemed universities often fill late, especially if the budget is more than ₹20L per annum.

Colleges like:

  • Sri Siddhartha Medical College, Tumkur
  • BVDU Sangli
  • Santosh Medical College, Ghaziabad
  • Saveetha / Sree Balaji Medical, Chennai

Expert Advice

  • Prof C.B.P. Singh (NEET Mentor): “Always plan your choice list with both dreams and backups. Many deserving students miss out because they only list their top 30 picks.”
  • Sanjay Tiwari (MBBS Counsellor): “A 300-college list is not about greed, it’s about strategy. With realistic mapping and backup options, you will always land somewhere.”

Your MCC choice list is not just a formality; it’s your roadmap to a medical seat. Whether you’re aiming for AIIMS or looking at deemed colleges, a structured, well-researched 300-choice list gives you power over uncertainty.

Don’t copy from toppers. Build your list with your rank, budget, priorities, and NEET PG stats in mind.
