Every year, lakhs of students prepare for NEET UG with full dedication. They spend the whole year studying, joining coaching classes, and giving mock tests, all to become a doctor by getting an MBBS seat.
This year, in NEET UG 2025, more than 20.8 lakh students gave the exam. The result was declared on 14th June, and over 12.36 lakh students passed. But here’s the big issue: only 1.18 lakh MBBS seats are available in the entire country. This means that around 11 lakh students, even after passing NEET, will not get admission in MBBS. Their dream of becoming a doctor will remain incomplete.
Why So Many Students Miss Out on MBBS?
Even though lakhs of students qualify for NEET, the number of MBBS seats is very limited. That’s the main reason why so many students don’t get admission. Let’s look at what options these students have:

What Can Students Do Now?
- Study MBBS Abroad:
Students who can afford it may choose to study MBBS in countries such as Russia, Georgia, and Kazakhstan. But this is not possible for everyone due to high costs. - Choose Other Medical Courses:
Some students take admission in other courses like BAMS (Ayurveda), BHMS (Homoeopathy), BUMS (Unani), or Nursing. According to this year’s NEET UG results, around 2.4 lakh seats are available in these fields, including Medical, Dental, AYUSH, and Nursing. - Prepare Again for Next Year:
Many students decide to take a drop year and prepare again, hoping for a better score and rank next time. But this takes more time, effort, and money.
As per the latest update from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for 2025–26, there are 780 medical colleges in India. These colleges offer MBBS and other healthcare-related courses. But for students who only dream of becoming an MBBS doctor, the seat shortage makes it very difficult.
