In a significant boost to medical education capacity, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats at Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Medical Sciences (SSIMS), raising the total intake from 200 to 250 seats for the academic year 2025–26.
Approval After Appeal Hearing
The decision followed a first appeal filed by SSIMS, after which the NMC’s Appeal Committee conducted a virtual hearing on October 1, 2025. The committee, chaired by Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, along with members Dr. D.K. Sharma and Prof. (Dr.) Gangadhar Taduri, reviewed several aspects, including faculty attendance data, infrastructure facilities, and clinical material.
After evaluating the records and inspection reports, the committee found the institute to have sufficient faculty strength, infrastructure, and clinical facilities to support the increased intake. Consequently, the appeal was approved, and the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) was directed to issue a revised Letter of Permission (LoP) to the institute.
