National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a fresh clarification regarding online MBBS studies pursued by Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs). This latest update, released on March 18, 2026, replaces the earlier notice and aims to clear confusion among students.
What’s the Issue?
During COVID-19 and war situations, many FMGs completed part of their MBBS through online classes. This created uncertainty about whether their degrees would be valid in India.
NMC’s Clear Stand
NMC has now made it very clear:
- Online studies must be compensated with physical training
- If not compensated abroad → students must complete 1–2 years clerkship in India
- If already compensated → no extra training required (with proof)
Big Relief for Students
Students who have a valid compensatory certificate from their foreign university will be eligible for registration in India without extra burden.
What Does “Sufficiently Compensated” Mean?
NMC explains that:
- Online classes must be replaced with physical attendance
- Universities should provide:
- Extra classes OR
- Extended course duration OR
- Internship training
Internship Rule (Important)
- Students admitted after 18 Nov 2021 → Must complete 1-year internship (CRMI) in India after FMGE
- Older batches → Governed by previous rules
Who Will Verify Everything?
- State Medical Councils (SMCs) will handle registrations
- They will check:
- FMGE qualification
- Compensation proof
- Internship completion
Any mistake or missing requirement = Registration rejected
Final Takeaway
This clarification brings both relief and strict compliance:
- Relief for students who already completed compensation
- Strict rules for those who didn’t
NMC’s goal is simple: Ensure every doctor has proper clinical (hands-on) training before practicing in India
