Education expert Sanjay Tiwari pointed out that even after 10 days of result declaration, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has not released any official counselling schedule. He added that admission prospectuses for prestigious institutes like AIIMS, JIPMER Puducherry, and Karaikal are also yet to be published. These institutes follow slightly different eligibility norms, though admissions will still be based on NEET UG 2025 merit ranks.

Confusion Among Mid-Scorers: To Repeat or Not?
Sanjay Tiwari said that the biggest dilemma is for candidates scoring between 500-520 marks in NEET UG 2025. Thousands of students fall into this category. They are uncertain whether to wait for MBBS seats via central or state counselling, or begin preparing again for the next attempt. If they repeat, there’s a chance of scoring better next year, but they are unsure whether to participate in counselling or take a drop.
Breakdown of Total MBBS Seats in India(Govt vs Private)
As per the National Medical Commission (NMC) website:
- India has 780 medical colleges offering 1,18,148 MBBS seats.
- Of these, 428 are government medical colleges with 59,782 seats.
- The remaining 352 private or trust colleges offer 58,316 MBBS seats.
There is also a possibility that 1,000 to 2,000 new MBBS seats might be added before counselling begins as new medical colleges get approved.
Additionally, more than 6,000 seats in government colleges are reserved under management and NRI quotas, further reducing the number of low-cost options available to general students.
