Why NMC to Reduce MBBS Seats?

NMC action against 30 Maharashtra Medical Colleges

In June 2025, the NMC halted new MBBS admissions in at least 30 medical colleges across Maharashtra. These included both recently established and older institutions in districts like Buldhana, Amravati, Chandrapur, Akola, and Nagpur. The reasons cited were:

  • Severe faculty shortages
  • Lack of functional teaching hospitals
  • Non-compliance with Minimum Standard Requirements (MSRs)

This step alone could result in the loss of over 3,000 MBBS seats, triggering panic among NEET UG 2025 counselling hopefuls.

CBI’s Crackdown on Fraudulent Medical Colleges

Adding fuel to the fire, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) recently uncovered a multi-crore MBBS admission bribery scandal. Colleges in states like Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra were found submitting fake faculty data and ghost infrastructure to obtain NMC approval.

The scam exposed how some private colleges allegedly paid up to ₹55 lakh in bribes to secure favourable inspection reports. The CBI raided over 40 locations and arrested multiple individuals, including doctors and medical administrators.

These developments have put the NMC under intense pressure to review its accreditation processes and clean up the seat allocation mechanism.

Medical Colleges Not Submitting Self‑Assessment Forms (SAFs)

Another serious concern is the non-submission of mandatory Self-Assessment Forms (SAFs) by several medical colleges. SAFs detail key institutional metrics like:

  • Faculty strength
  • Bed occupancy in hospitals
  • Lab equipment and cadaver availability
  • Clinical exposure and teaching quality

Despite repeated directives from the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) to make SAFs public, the NMC has not done so, citing legal consultations. This lack of transparency has raised suspicions about irregularities in college compliance, giving the NMC more reason to withhold or revoke MBBS seat approvals.

How Many MBBS Seats Will NMC Reduce?

Though NMC hasn’t officially declared any numbers, industry experts estimate that 3,000 to 5,000 MBBS seats may be at risk in NEET UG 2025 due to:

  • Bans on admissions in some colleges in Maharashtra and other states
  • Show-cause notices to colleges in Chhattisgarh and MP
  • Failure to meet the updated NMC faculty and infrastructure guidelines
  • Pending legal or regulatory action against specific private institutions

This could bring the total available MBBS seats down from ~1,18,000 to ~1,13,000 for the 2025 cycle, significantly impacting student preferences and cut-off trends.

NMC to reduce MBBS Seats

While the decision may hurt students in the short term, experts believe it’s part of a necessary quality control drive. An unnamed medical education policy analyst said:

“Increasing MBBS seats without matching infrastructure is reckless. It puts patient safety and medical training at risk. NMC must ensure colleges are not just rubber-stamped businesses.”

What It Means for NEET UG 2025 Counselling

  • Increased competition: With fewer seats, cut-offs are expected to rise, especially for government and reputed private colleges.
  • More scrutiny on college credentials: Aspirants must research college quality, NMC approval, and past NEET PG performance before choosing.
  • Delays possible: Counselling rounds may be delayed if NMC revokes more seat approvals or court cases emerge.

The medical aspirant community is divided. While many support the move to ensure quality, others worry about the lack of clarity and last-minute surprises.

While India urgently needs more doctors, simply increasing the number of medical colleges or MBBS seats without proper infrastructure and faculty is not the solution. If NMC decides to reduce MBBS seats for NEET UG 2025, it will be a bitter but necessary move to clean up the system.

Aspirants and parents must stay informed, verify college credentials, and make well-researched decisions during the upcoming counselling season.
