NEET UG 2025 Counselling amid NMC MBBS Seat Increase

The NEET UG 2025 counselling process is in its final stages. The seat allocation for Round 3 is currently underway, offering opportunities for students who missed out in earlier rounds.

A Bengaluru student shared, “I got a dental seat in the first round, but wanted MBBS. With the seat increase in the second round, I finally got my MBBS seat. It feels like a dream come true.”

Karnataka Government’s Proposal and NMC Response

Earlier this year, the Karnataka State Government had submitted proposals to the NMC for enhancing 850 seats, including:

  • 50 additional seats each in 13 government medical colleges.
  • 100 additional seats each in two government medical colleges.
  • 250 seats for two new government medical colleges in Ramanagara and Kanakapura.

Deemed universities, including Jagadguru Gangadhar Mahaswamigalu Moorusavirmath Medical College (Hubballi) and Sri Siddhartha Medical College (Tumakuru), requested 50 additional seats each.

However, the NMC initially rejected the proposal in May 2025, citing infrastructure and faculty limitations. Later, in the second round of seat allocation, 999 seats were sanctioned, benefiting Karnataka students significantly.

NMC to Approve 75000 Seats by 2029

During his Independence Day address on August 15, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a plan to create 75,000 new medical seats nationwide by 2029, aimed at fulfilling the aspirations of budding doctors and enhancing India’s healthcare capacity.

Following this, Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, the new NMC chairman, confirmed that 8,000 additional seats would be sanctioned across the country this year. Karnataka’s 999-seat allocation represents a substantial share of this expansion.

Advantages of Studying MBBS in Karnataka

According to B.L. Sujatha Rathod, Director of the Directorate of Medical Education, Karnataka’s medical colleges are highly preferred due to:

  • Quality teaching systems
  • Advanced clinical practice opportunities
  • Well-established infrastructure and facilities

She added that further seat enhancement proposals from Karnataka colleges will be consolidated and submitted to the NMC next year, potentially increasing the State’s share of medical seats even further.

Impact on Students and Parents

The additional seats have brought relief to thousands of aspirants and their families, particularly those who missed out on MBBS in the first round of counselling.

The increase in seats ensures better access to quality medical education and strengthens Karnataka’s position as a leading hub for medical studies in India.
