In a major move to enhance the quality of medical education in India, Dr. B.N. Gangadhar, the newly appointed Chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC), has proposed to introduce a comprehensive rating system for medical colleges nationwide. This initiative aims to assess institutions based on various parameters, including faculty strength, infrastructure and adherence to the Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) curriculum.
Dr. Gangadhar, who previously served as the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru, emphasised the need for a transparent and standardised evaluation mechanism. The proposed rating system is expected to guide students in making informed choices and encourage colleges to improve their standards.
The NMC’s plan comes in response to ongoing challenges in the medical education sector, such as faculty shortages and infrastructural deficiencies. By implementing this rating system, the NMC aims to foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement among medical institutions.
