The National Testing Agency (NTA) has stepped in to clear widespread confusion among NEET UG 2026 aspirants over compensatory time eligibility, just a day before the medical entrance exam is held on June 21, 2026.
The clarification comes through a public notice dated June 20, 2026, after a wave of queries flooded social media platforms following the release of admit cards.
Why NTA Issued This Advisory
Once NEET UG 2026 admit cards went live as announced in NTA’s earlier public notice dated June 14, 2026 many candidates noticed something unusual. A “Y” appeared against the field labelled “Eligibility for Compensatory Time” on their hall tickets, even though they did not belong to the PwD or PwBD (Persons with Disability/Persons with Benchmark Disability) category.
This triggered confusion and panic among general-category candidates, many of whom assumed they had been granted extra time for the exam. NTA took note of these concerns trending online and issued a formal advisory to set the record straight.
What the Notice Actually Says
According to NTA, the admit card already carries all relevant information regarding scribe eligibility and compensatory time for PwD/PwBD candidates.
The agency clarified that only those candidates whose admit cards specifically read **”Eligibility for Compensatory Time: “Yes” will actually receive this benefit during the exam.
A plain “Y” on its own does not mean a candidate qualifies. NTA stated in no uncertain terms that candidates who find just the letter “Y” printed on their admit card without the complete “***Yes” annotation will not be granted any compensatory time at the exam centre.
In short, no candidate outside this specifically marked group will be eligible for additional time, regardless of how the field appears on their document.
Where the Eligibility Rules Come From
NTA has pointed candidates toward existing government frameworks for further reading rather than introducing any new rule. These include:
- Guidelines for conducting written examinations for Persons with Disabilities, issued by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment via office memorandum dated August 29, 2018
- A subsequent Office Memorandum (F. No. 29-6/2019-DD-III) dated August 10, 2022
- Paragraph 5, Chapter 7 of the official NEET UG 2026 Information Bulletin, available on neet.nta.nic.in
These documents form the basis for deciding which candidates with disabilities are entitled to a scribe and/or extra exam time.
