The newly established Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) in Jammu and Kashmir has been approved for 50 MBBS seats for the upcoming academic session 2025-26.
The institute, managed by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), started operations last year in Reasi district and is now preparing to enrol its first batch of medical students.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda. Sharing the update on X (formerly Twitter), he said,
“Grateful to Honourable PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Honourable Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri J P Nadda Ji for sanctioning 50 MBBS seats for the newly established Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME).”
Opportunities for Students in J&K
Sinha highlighted that this step will create more opportunities for students wishing to pursue medical education within the Union Territory. He added that the government has increased MBBS seats in recent years to improve access to medical education and strengthen the healthcare system.
College Operations and Training
The shrine board had earlier approved the establishment of a 50-seat medical college at Kakryal in August 2023, with plans to expand to 100 seats in the future. SMVDIME started functioning in November last year from the administrative block of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University.
The college is affiliated with SMVD University, and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital will serve as its teaching hospital. Students will receive hands-on training across 26 medical specialities, and the institute is expected to be fully equipped in the coming years, boosting both medical education and healthcare infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
