NMC Amendment 2026: In a move aimed at expanding medical education capacity, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an amendment notification dated April 23, 2026, introducing key changes to the Undergraduate Medical Education regulations.
These changes revise provisions under the UG-MSR 2023 and the Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023. These changes are expected to directly impact the establishment of new medical colleges and the expansion of existing MBBS seats across India.
Key Changes Announced in NMC Amendment 2026
1. Removal of 150 MBBS Seat Cap
The NMC has deleted the earlier rule that restricted medical colleges from increasing MBBS seats beyond a total of 150 students from the academic year 2024-25 onward. This effectively allows colleges to expand intake capacity based on infrastructure and compliance.
2. Population-Based Seat Ratio Rule Withdrawn
Another major change is the removal of the clause that required states/UTs to maintain a ratio of 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population. This gives more flexibility to states and institutions in planning seat expansion without population-based limitations.
3. Revised Distance Norm Between College and Hospital
The earlier rule stating that the travel time between a medical college and its associated hospital should not exceed 30 minutes has been replaced.
- Now, the maximum distance allowed is 10 km.
- For North Eastern and Himalayan states, the limit has been extended to 15 km.
This change simplifies compliance and provides clearer, measurable criteria for institutions.
What NMC Amendment 2026 Means for Students
These reforms are likely to:
- Increase the number of MBBS seats in coming years
- Encourage the establishment of new medical colleges
- Improve accessibility to medical education, especially in underprivileged regions
The latest NMC amendments mark a progressive shift toward addressing the growing demand for medical education in India. By removing rigid caps and easing infrastructural norms, the Commission aims to create a more flexible and expansion-friendly ecosystem for medical colleges, ultimately benefiting aspirants preparing for NEET UG and beyond.
