The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, is one of the most prestigious medical institutes in India. Every year, thousands of NEET UG aspirants dream of donning the olive-green uniform while pursuing an MBBS at AFMC.
But here’s something curious: AFMC is the only central government medical college in India whose MBBS admission counselling is not done by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
Yes, you read that right.

Even though AFMC admissions are linked to NEET UG scores, the actual seat allotment is not done by MCC, which handles counselling for the All India Quota, Central Universities (e.g., DU, AMU, BHU), Deemed Universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, ESIC medical colleges, and other government medical colleges.
But why is it so?
Let’s understand here in this article and MCC’s clarification on this.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has explained the MBBS admission process for the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, in the NEET 2025 counselling guidelines, specifically addressing the NEET Counselling 2025 process.
AFMC Admissions 2025: MCC’s Role Is Only Registration
As per Chapter 9 of the UGNEET 2025 Counselling Guidelines, the MCC has made its role in the AFMC MBBS admission process crystal clear.
Here’s how it works:
- Candidates must register on the MCC portal, www.mcc.nic.in, to be considered for AFMC admission.
- However, that’s the only part MCC plays in the process. Once registered, the list of candidates is handed over to AFMC.
- After that, AFMC independently conducts counselling, screening, interviews, and final selection, as per its own admission rules.
“The list of registered candidates will be sent to AFMC authorities for conducting counselling at their end,” the MCC bulletin states.
AFMC = No Allotment by MCC
MCC has made it clear in its 2025 advisory:
- It has no role in seat allotment at AFMC
- And will not entertain any queries, grievances, or RTIs related to AFMC admissions.
That means:
- If you’re aiming for AFMC, your questions about seat status, interview dates, or eligibility criteria must be directed to AFMC Pune only, not MCC or DGHS.
Stringent Medical & Physical Standards at AFMC
Unlike other medical colleges, AFMC has its own medical eligibility standards, often stricter than general MBBS requirements.
Candidates will undergo:
- Detailed medical examination
- Physical fitness tests
- Personal interviews
In past years, many high scorers in NEET UG have been rejected by AFMC due to failure in medical or physical standards, despite securing excellent academic marks.
So, don’t assume your NEET rank is enough.
You need to be both academically strong and medically fit to clear AFMC’s admission hurdles.

Strategy for AFMC Aspirants in NEET UG 2025
If AFMC is on your dream list, here’s what you should do:
- Register on the MCC website during the Round 1 registration window.
- Download and review AFMC’s latest MBBS prospectus from afmc.nic.in.
- Get a thorough medical check-up done in advance to ensure eligibility.
- Keep physical fitness and medical certificates ready for documentation.
- Regularly monitor both MCC and AFMC websites for updates on cutoffs, interview dates, and joining instructions.
Why AFMC Has a Separate Admission Process?
AFMC is not just a medical college; it’s a premier institution for the Indian Armed Forces. That’s why its selection criteria are not limited to academics.
The selection involves:
- NEET UG score screening
- Physical fitness standards
- Psychometric assessments
- Interview to assess officer-like qualities
Due to the military component of the training, the Ministry of Defence has kept the counselling and selection process under AFMC’s direct control, even though NEET UG remains the academic gateway.
AFMC, Pune, stands apart, not just in reputation but also in its admission process. While MCC facilitates admissions to over 780 medical colleges, AFMC does things differently, and for good reason.
So, if your goal is to serve the nation as a doctor in uniform, understand that NEET rank alone isn’t enough. You need to clear AFMC’s tough screening, and MCC won’t be helping you beyond registration.
Your action plan: Register, prepare, stay fit, and stay alert.
