AIIMS History

The foundation stone of the first AIIMS was laid in 1952, and the institute was officially established in 1956 under the AIIMS Act. It was originally proposed to be set up in Calcutta, but the plan was shifted to New Delhi after the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, declined the proposal. AIIMS Delhi was later granted the status of an Institute of National Importance (INI), a prestigious recognition it continues to hold to this day.

In 2003, the Government of India introduced the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) with the aim of addressing regional disparities in access to quality healthcare. The initiative focused on setting up AIIMS like institutions across the country. Although the scheme was announced in 2003, its implementation began in 2006. Since then, AIIMS institutes have been developed in multiple phases, and over time, several new campuses have been established or proposed in various states.

List of AIIMS Institutes

All AIIMS branches, whether operational or under development, share a common vision to provide top-quality, affordable healthcare and medical education across India. While AIIMS New Delhi remains the renowned institution, newer institutes like AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Jodhpur, and Rishikesh are rapidly gaining reputation for clinical excellence, infrastructure, and academics. The consistent increase in MBBS seats across these institutes has also helped address the shortage of skilled doctors in India. Each AIIMS is designed with a hospital, college, and residential campus, and is governed under the central government’s umbrella with INI (Institute of National Importance) status.

This trend highlights that top ranks are still needed for admission into AIIMS Delhi and other older branches. However, the newer campuses are creating more opportunities for students with mid to lower ranks, especially those from reserved categories, thereby expanding access to quality medical education across a wider region of India.
