It transitioned into an independent public university in 1970. Makerere University comprises nine colleges and one school, delivering programs to approximately 36,000 undergraduate and 4,000 postgraduate students.
Over the years, Makerere University Uganda expanded its scope and evolved into a Center for Higher Education in East Africa by 1935. In 1937, the College began transforming into a fully-fledged institution of higher education, providing post-school certificate courses.
