The University College of Medical Sciences was founded in 1971 by the efforts of the Delhi Health Minister to impart medical education to all the deserving students. Even though two medical colleges, MAMC and LHMC, existed in Delhi, many students could not study medicine. Classes for the new college commenced in the temporary Department of Chemistry on the North Campus of the University of Delhi.
