About North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences
The MBBS course affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU – a Central University) was started after obtaining permission for the course under Section 10(A) of the IMC Act, 1956, which was notified through the Ministry’s letter No. U.12012/92/2007-NE dated 25 March 2008, thus becoming the first institution in the State of Meghalaya to start the MBBS course. The 8th Governing Council approved starting the MBBS course. The Ministry, vide order No. U.12012/92/2008 dated 16 June 2008 sent a three-member inspection team headed by Professor Sambasiva Rao, Additional Director General, DGHS. As per the recommendations of the Committee, which were communicated by the Ministry vide letter No. U.12012/92/2007-NE dated July 15, 2008, the MBBS course started at NEIGRIHMS from the session 2008-2009 with an annual intake of 50 admissions. NEIGRIHMS itself was established in 1987 as the first postgraduate medical institution in the North Eastern region, on the pattern of AIIMS New Delhi and PGIMER Chandigarh.

Candidates must satisfy all of the following conditions to be considered for NEIGRIHMS MBBS admission:
- Domicile: Must be a permanent resident/domicile of one of the eight North Eastern states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura), holding a valid Domicile/Permanent Residential Certificate issued for the current admission year.
- Schooling requirement: Must have studied and completed schooling at an institution located in India during the two years preceding the application.
- Age: Must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31 December of the admission year.
- Academic qualification: Must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (including practicals) and English, securing at least 50% aggregate in PCB for General category (40% for SC/ST/OBC, 45% for PwD-General as per the wider state quota norms).
- NEET UG qualification: Must have appeared for and qualified NEET UG of the admission year; candidates who do not qualify NEET UG do not appear on the merit list at all.
There is no separate NEIGRIHMS entrance test – selection for both the state-specific and North East Open category seats runs purely on NEET UG score and percentile

For the 2026-27 session, NEIGRIHMS moved the MBBS North East Open category application to its online portal:
- From the opening date, visit www.neigrihms.gov.in and locate the “MBBS Course online application link (for domicile of the North Eastern Region only).
- Register on the portal with a valid email ID and set a password.
- Log in, go to Apply Services – View All Available Services, and search for “MBBS.
- Read all instructions carefully before filling the form, then submit it along with the ₹500 (non-refundable) application processing fee before the closing date.
- Incomplete applications are summarily rejected, and no correspondence is entertained on this point.
